Delcam Offers Free CAD Viewer PowerSHAPE-e

BIRMINGHAM, UK, June 22, 2006 - Delcam has introduced a free CAD viewer, PowerSHAPE-e, that can enable everyone involved in the product development process to view, and comment on, CAD data throughout any project. It can be downloaded from www.powershape-e.com.

Delcam’s PowerSHAPE-e allows free and secure distribution of prototype designs to potential sub-contractors

The software is intended mainly for people that do not normally use CAD systems, such as sales staff that need to discuss progress with the customer or market researchers that need to get feedback from potential customers or retailers on new design proposals. However, it can also be used to supply preliminary data to sub-contractors so they can start work on quotations before the design has been finalised.

All models can be password-protected to prevent any unauthorised export of the data. This extra security ensures that any design sent out to sub-contractors for manufacturing quotes cannot find its way onto the market until a quote is approved. At that point, the password can be released to the approved supplier only, so enabling manufacture to begin.

The PowerSHAPE-e download incorporates Delcam’s PS-Exchange data translation software and so can read in files from all the main CAD systems, including CATIA, UG, Pro/Engineer, IDEAS, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor and Solid Edge, as well as neutral formats such as IGES and STEP. Once imported, the models can be marked up with any comments or suggestions.

For CAD users, the viewer incorporates a wide range of surface and solid modelling functionality. Users can experiment with different design variants, whether these are intended to improve the appearance or style of the design, or are suggestions to simplify its manufacture. Once the changes have been finalised, notes can be added explaining what alterations have been made and why.

Model compare functionality is included so that any changes to the model can be identified and highlighted quickly at all stages of the product’s development. This helps ensure that everyone involved with the project is using the most recent design data. It also makes it easier for managers to check that their recommended alterations have been incorporated into the design in the way that they intended.

As manufacturing becomes more global, good communications along the supply chain are a growing challenge. Developments like e-mail and Internet telephony have made long-distance communication much easier. Delcam hopes that its new viewer will further speed and simplify the exchange of design ideas and modifications.

PowerSHAPE-e should also make new product development more successful and more efficient. More communication with potential customers should increase the likelihood that the new design will be received well by consumers. Similarly, obtaining feedback from sub-contractors earlier in the development process should help ensure that progress from design to manufacture can proceed efficiently. It should also avoid problems with designs that appear attractive at the concept stage but that are too difficult or too expensive to manufacture cost-effectively.

PARIS, France, June 6, 2006 - 01consulting studies the French PLM market, under a new report released today.

Second largest European region for the PLM solutions, France (and the French speaking regions) count for 11% of the global PLM market, with an 8% annual growth, exceeding €1.1B; a particularly dynamic, innovative and competitive market.

PLM tools are studied in 4 categories:

  • MCAD (Mechanical Design tools): The oldest and the biggest segment, still growing slightly.
  • PDM (Collaborative tools and Product Data Management): Growing fast, but mainly for MCAD vendors offering full PLM.
  • MCAE (Simulation, analysis and engineering tools): Growing fast but silently.
  • CAM (Manufacturing tools): Needs expressed for new technology.

One of the findings of this report is that the growth of the PDM market is mainly due to the growth of PDM revenue generated by the top MCAD vendors. Dassault Systèmes, PTC and UGS are performing particularly well while SAP, MatrixOne, Agile and Lascom don’t meet the same level of success. This tendency confirms what we had already forecasted in our previous reports: Buying decisions regarding PLM, within the customers, get influenced more often from Engineering departments rather than the IT group. In this context, and given the financial consequences of this tendency, the acquisition of MatrixOne by Dassault Systèmes is not a surprise.

PLM tools – France

With a dozen of charts and graphs, in a 20 pages document, this report provides a quantitative and qualitative picture of the market : market size, trend and vendors positions in each of the four segments; MCAD, PDM, MCAE, CAM.

TROY, Michigan, June 7, 2006 - Visual Collaboration Technologies Inc. today announced VCollab™ 2006, a suite of software that delivers high-performance visualization of multidisciplinary product engineering data using a single lightweight viewing technology.

The new software provides the first common platform for viewing and manipulating 3D digital product design, analysis, and manufacturing information authored in different engineering formats.

In this view, VCollab displays virtual product data from 3D CAD, CAM, FEA, and CFD software within Microsoft Internet Explorer. At the upper left is a 3D CAD model, which users can manipulate and explore to understand the product. The upper right shows an interactive crash simulation. The lower left panel shows a fluid dynamics simulation. At the lower right, a sequence created in CAM software shows a welding simulation.

With VCollab, individuals and groups throughout product development can share and interact with complex computer-aided-design (CAD), computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided-engineering (CAE) files without having to access the native applications. VCollab 2006 extends the opportunity for product visualization far across the spectrum of engineering disciplines, from the creation of 3D digital product geometry to finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and manufacturing assembly simulation.

“Effective collaboration among distributed groups of experts is crucial for competitiveness in product development today,” says Vijaya Kalimi, business relationship manager for Tata Consultancy Services. “Because our customer base is multinational and crosses many industries, we are always looking for tools that improve communication. With VCollab we can easily create simple 3D documents and presentations with embedded finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics simulations, and then share this complex product data efficiently with clients all over the world.”

“Our customers have to communicate sophisticated 3D engineering information among their local and global teams and with upstream OEMs and downstream suppliers,” says Prasad Mandava, CEO of Visual Collaboration Technologies. “Many product development teams expend a great deal of time and effort accomplishing this, and they often end up juggling a constellation of viewing tools. VCollab 2006 is a significant step forward for industry because it is a multidisciplinary solution. Manufacturers can use VCollab to share valuable data and results easily from all of their 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE activities.”

VCollab allows individuals and groups throughout global manufacturing supply chains to interact with 3D engineering details that have traditionally been difficult to communicate. The software combines powerful graphics tools with a compression technology that reduces file size while preserving engineering content. VCollab files can be embedded into Microsoft® Office applications or opened directly within Internet Explorer. Team members can then view embedded CAD, CAM, and CAE product data with laptop or desktop computers, or on graphics clusters in immersive environments, without needing the native engineering software.

The VCollab 2006 software suite contains:

  • VCollab Pro, scalable, high-performance visualization software that converts large 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE data sets to highly compressed .vcb format. A file saved in .vcb format loads up to 100 times faster than it does in its native authoring format, so communicating 3D product data is easy and convenient. VCollab Pro contains an array of tools for visualizing 3D digital models and simulations.
  • VCollab Presenter, feature-rich, easy-to-use CAx viewing software that enables nontechnical personnel to view and manipulate 3D CAD, CAM, and CAE information, using Microsoft® Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on laptops and desktops.
  • VMove CAE, a direct native reader of CAE output results that converts native CAE results files into highly compressed VCollab .vcb files based on user inputs. CAE software supported includes MSC Nastran, LS-DYNA, ANSYS, and ABAQUS.

Delcam Releases PowerINSPECT 06

BIRMINGHAM, UK, June 7, 2006 - Delcam has introduced three new versions of its PowerINSPECT inspection software. PowerINSPECT is already firmly established as the world’s leading hardware-independent inspection software and these new releases are expected to increase its dominance of the market for inspection of prototypes, components and tooling against CAD data.

PowerINSPECT can undertake full simulations of the inspection sequence on a model of a CMM or machine tool

The new release of the main PowerINSPECT program incorporates collision detection, an enhanced Geometric Explorer, additional best-fit options for analyzing the results, and improvements to the software’s already industry-leading graphics and report generation. Two new versions have also been launched – an entry-level on-machine verification option for use by machine tool operators after only a half-day of training and an offline manual version for metrology departments to develop inspection sequences for application using a “play-only” version of the software on the shop floor.

The new collision detection functionality in PowerINSPECT is based on that used for gouge prevention and collision detection in Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM software. As the inspection sequence is being developed, the software provides protection against stylus and probe collisions by flagging a warning if any move between measurement points will violate the part being inspected. When the routine is completed, a more comprehensive check of the whole sequence can be undertaken with a simulation on a computer model of either a co-ordinate measuring machine or a machine tool operating on-machine verification.

The new Geometric Explorer, which is now fully integrated within PowerINSPECT, makes it easier to extract nominal data from CAD models. More detailed information can now be extracted about the geometry and placed into the sequence tree of operations.

Current versions of PowerINSPECT only operate best fitting of data based on “least-squares” averaging. The additional options will offer maximum or minimum material conditions to ensure the measured data is always either inside or outside the nominal CAD model. Similarly, the collected data can be forced to lie within a minimum and maximum tolerance band from the nominal data. The new options will be especially useful for scrap-or-save decisions carried out on damaged parts using on-machine verification.

The improved graphics result from the ability to store view orientations within the sequence tree of operations. This allows the software to move immediately to the correct orientation relative to the model when taking measurements and removes the need for manual adjustment of the view. Other information can also be stored in the sequence tree, such as text, graphics or even videos, so making it easier for offline programmers to explain the inspection sequence to the operator.

One of PowerINSPECT’s most important attributes has always been the clarity of its reports. This is being further improved with the addition of an HTML template editor that makes it much easier to create customised reports. This can be used, for example, to establish a series of different templates so that each of the company’s customers can have their reports in a specific format.
